Pride?

Here is a video of my son scoring a Touchdown. As any dad should be, I was very proud of my starting quarterback, scoring a touchdown. I posted his video on facebook, showed all my friends…watched it several 100 times! I began to wonder as I sat there and reveled in joy. Is this how God feels? When we make a choice for Him over our sin. When we are steered down the wrong road and we make a u-turn.

Well when I think what I know, that’s when I look to the scripture to see what God says.
“For the Lord takes delight in his people, He crowns the humble with salvation.”
Psalm 149:4

hmmm…. delight is a little different than proud or pride.

“Do not go beyond what is written. Then you will not take pride in one man over against another. For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?”
1 Corinthians 4:6,7

hmm…. so then I am reminded that

Psalm 127, “Children are a gift from the Lord.”

So how can I be proud of something that is a gift to me from God?

I believe what God is saying is that we should delight in our kids, love our kids, train our kids. It is clear that God was showing delight in His son.

“And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:11

He was pleased with his son. I am pleased with my son, not only because of football and running in a touchdown, but because he is patient, kind, tough, loves Jesus and opens the door for ladies.

We have to be careful with our Pride. I think it can lead to disappointment in our kids if they don’t “succeed” to certain world standards. Justice first football season was rough at best. He had a hard time, he wasn’t even sure if he ever wanted to play again. I have always told him that it isn’t about touchdowns, but about you playing to your best ability. Do you give your whole heart? If you can answer that question that’s when God is pleased with us.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Psalm 37:4

so delight in your kids, your spouse and your God, because He delights in you.
